I was posted to work in a foreign country which uses a complete different official language from the one used in my country. I must say that this was a very tough assignment because I was to do a teaching job and to the people who didn’t understand a word I spoke.
My job would involve teaching adults and children alike.
I had three months to start producing
results and guess what I did. I started teaching the kids because I knew with them I would be forced to use their language no matter how much I would struggle. One and half months later, the results were amazing .From sign language, I could now teach simple topics in their language!!
During my time in this country, I also learnt that mixing with the
locals and actually living among them helps a lot. For those who have worked in foreign countries before will agree with me that foreigners usually stay in secluded places surrounded by their own kind. If you have an assignment like mine, or you just want to feel part of that particular culture, then it is important that the first few months you forget the luxuries and just live with the lowest in society. Once the locals feel that you are part of them, they will teach you all you need to learn about their language and culture and you will enjoy your stay without the fear of ever annoying them due to ignorance.
