Interdisciplinary works between law and
linguistics, a field that is becoming to be seen as extremely fruitful
and stimulating, are still rare in Brazil. Therefore, the
work "Análise do Discurso: uma linguagem do Poder Judiciário"
(Analysis of Discourse: a language of the judicial powers), by Jose
de Ribamar Mendes Heifer, researcher in both these
areas, makes a
valuable contribution to the filling of this gap, in relation to the
examination of the written text resultant of the verbal deposition of
the defendant, after the reformularization of the speeches for
putting to the
judge for pre-qualification and interrogation. The
questions that the author raises - will not the judge "for want
of a
better term" give
legal direction to the trials, not give
direction to the legal
professionals for whom the legal processes are
written, not give direction that "better" pleases the
dominant power in the society in which we live? These are doubts that
assault us frequently and for which the present book comes to offer
some of the answers at which the author has arrived in his exhausting
research on the question. This is without doubt a work of which the
reading must not only be recommended for professionals of the two
involved areas but also for the public in general.
