This story starts with a three criminals who have just been released from jail and who have decided to get some cash by robbing a small 7-11. When the guy behind the counter pulls a gun and is killed however. The three criminals run off but soon their car has problems and they are forced to find another. Heading into a block of houses they go to steal a car by find they are forced to hole up in a house when a cop on patrol is spotted by them, to make matters more complicated the house they choose to hole up in has a small family in residence, and also the cop notices the criminals and there is shoot out in which the cop is hurt.
Soon the whole house is surrounded by police and this is where the story really takes off. The main character is now the chief of police for the small town where all this is taking place. The chief used to be a New York SWAT team hostage negotiator who quite as he had got a hostage killed and found it hard to continue such work. Now he is again thrown into a similar situation by these criminals.
To make matters even more complicated however, the house the criminals are holed up in is filled with millions of dollars for the family inside is that of an accountant who works for several of the most powerful mob bosses in America. These mob bosses are soon very worried about their money and other possible incriminating evidence in the house and soon they have their own men on the way to try and resolve the problem.
The story then revolves around the chief of police trying to deal with the hostage takers inside the house, his own fears about dealing with a hostage situation again and also the machinations of the mobsters, which include the kidnapping of the chief of police’s family.
