Wolves of the Calla

Book Review by: Keith Barclay

Original Author: Stephen King
If you have followed along Stephen KIng's tale of Roland and his quest to the Dark Tower, you are able to appreciate the
similiarities between the novel and our own adventure we call a life. Roland begins his life as a boy of privilege, trained to become a gunslinger, and a man of courage and purpose. He stands alone in a time slowly forgotten, only whispered about by a few. Throughout the novel we see glimpses of a lonely man, continuing on only because it is all he knows, and the only reason for living. To continue the search, an elusive Dark Tower filling the dreams of Roland and his quartet of friends. Five stong, they now share Rolands's hunger for the truth of their own existence and possiblily the answer to the slow dacay of the MId-World.
Wolves of the Calla is part five of King's Dark Tower anthology, and as we near the end it is still unclear what lies ahead for Roland and his team. Will the Dark Tower be the resting place for a tired man who cares little for himself and only the essence of a truth so pure that any answer might ignite a flame that will be be impossible to put out? The quest for the Dark Tower and not understanding the reson for the search, is much the same as our pursuit through life. We get up every moring and carry out our regular routine, meanwhile, dreaming of a different world and a better life. Every person is motivated by many of the same reasons to continue on, but there are other reasons that are unique to only a few. This mixture of reason relates to this novel and is a driving force behind its compelling ability to allow us to see King's characters as real people, and invites us to feel what they are feeling. We can only hope that the next novel in the series will unravel more of this magnificent adventure of truth, justice, and courage.
