Living Within

Article Review by: Praveen Kamat

Original Authors: Sri Aurobindo and the Mother ; A S Dalal
In this highly competitve world which moves at the speed of light,
where a split second delay in decisionmaking can
cause significant if
not irreversible damage, continuous psychological disturbances such as
fear,anxiety,depression, anger , restlessness jealousy , suspicion ,
insecurity, etc are fairly common. Up to a certain degree these
disturbances are considered tolerable just like some amount of stress
is required to pep up our performance and concentration. However, when
these disturbances cross a dynamic threshold( since it varies from
person to person as per their respective mental strengths), the person
is said to be suffering from mental illness.
Sri Aurobindo emphasises the fact that in our modern society deep and
constant urge for sense gratification, for material objects of desire ,
easy distractability of the mind are felt by more and more people as
states that perturb the inner well-being.
Skilfully compiled by A S Dalal, the book consists of a beautiful,
smooth and concise introduction which explains the nature of the human
being and his psychological disturbances and mental health. The
introduction is followed by Chapters on the Disturbances of the mind ,
of the vital, of the body and of the subconscient. The last chapter explains exercises for growth and mastery.
The book is aimed for the general reader whose main aim is to attain
the state of perfect mental health or perfect mental fitness. It is one
of the excellent books published by Sri Aurobindo Ashram Press.
