Abeles, Sir Peter (1924-...), an Australian industrialist, played a prominent role in Australiais national transport business.

Abeles was born in Austria and educated in Hungary. After moving to Australia at the age of 25, he started selling knitwear and books door-to-door. He founded the transport company Alltrans Pty. Ltd. in 1950, building it into a lucrative business. Among the important contacts he made during the next 30 years were his fellow industrialist Rupert Murdoch, owner of the international media organization News Corporation, and the Labor Party politician Bob Hawke, one of Australiais longest-serving prime ministers.
In 1987, Abeles sold Alltrans to the international transport carrier Thomas Nationwide Transport (TNT) Ltd. Abeles later became chief executive of TNT. He also headed several other companies, including Ansett Airlines of Australia (jointly owned by TNT and News Corporation). In 1986, he collaborated with Murdoch in establishing AWAS, an airline leasing enterprise that was, by 1991, the third largest business of its kind in the world. Abelesi personal fortune during the late 1980is was estimated at 37 million Australian dollars. But the stock-market crash of 1987 and the global economic recession of the 1990is, including a prolonged pilotsi strike in 1990, led to large losses for TNT.
Outside the world of business, Abelesi activities included the setting up of the Australian Medical Foundation for Cancer Research. He also chaired the committee that unsuccessfully bid for the 1992 Olympic Games on behalf of Brisbane, Queensland. Abeles was knighted in 1972 and, in 1984, became a member of the board of Australiais Reserve Bank.Write your abstract here.
