My favourite
film.
Translating books to the
screen is always difficult. Director Billie August brings to the screen a gripping
story about
family Del Valle. The film is bared on Isabelle Allonde’s book – “House of
Spirits” and is set in Chile before Second World War The main character is a poor land owner Esteban played by Jeremy Irons. The somoltrach gives the impression that it is a powerful drama. However, it actually turns out to be a story of hope.
The film centers on Esteban who wants to name his dreams come true so he sets up home. As the years, go by Esteban changes for worse. Money and political career become more important than family. One day his daughter Blanca falls in
love with revolutionary called Pedro. Young lovers have to hide their love from Esteban because he does not approve it.
The film reaches a dramatic climax when communists take over reign in government. Blanca is tortured in prison due to Pedro. This is the time when Esteban had to correct his mistakes and get Blanca’s forgiveness.
“House of Spirits” covers many of the problems we face in society today – love, adultery, money and career. There is also historical aspect – general Pinochet’s coup. Actors are brilliant in theirs roles and convincing in the emotions they portray throughout.
It is a very impressive film, which hopes to touch every audience on a very personal level. The foundation of this is the film’s look, its atmosphere and attention to detail – this is where the film scores so highly.
I would definitely recommend seeing “House of spirits” to everybody.
