            My Mother''s Sewing Machine
My mother''s sewing machine was large and black with a big wheel. There was a foot pedal that had to be pumped back and forth as the wheel was hand-turned.
My mother used to sit me down beside her as she made clothes for me. I don''t inow if my other sisters and brothers remember my mother''s sewing machine or not, but I remember it as if it was only yesterday.
I watched my mother as she held the fabric under the needle with one hand and turned the wheel with the other. She worked the foot pedal at the same time. The foot pedal went back and forth. I loved it and as I grew older, I had such a desire to sew. My mother made me dresses and pants.
I remember before I started school, my mother made me an orange pair of pants with suspenders. I needed suspenders back then so my pants wouldn''t fall off me. Those pants were my favorite.
Before I started school, I had to have my vaccinations. One day my mother and father, and I went to the health clinic to have this done. My mother dressed me in my orange pants. My vaccinations hurt me a lot. On the way back home, we saw my cousin, Mary Sue Harrison walking from class at Saint Paul''s College in Lawrenceville, Virgina. We gave her a ride to our house. She teased me about having my vaccinations. She tickled me and said, "I know it hurt, ha, ha, ha, ha."   She asked me, "where did you get those cute little pants. I told her that my mother made them for me. Today, I can make anything that I want on my sewing machine. I am the only daughter that my mother has that can sew just like she used to.
