The Game of Life and How to Play It

Book Review by: KatWest

Original Author: Florence Scovel Shinn
Author Florence Scovel Shinn wrote “The Game of Life and How To Play It” in 1925 to inspire all
of us to see success ideology and its positive results are not as circumstantially distant as they appear. Her writing has proven to be greatly admired and esteemed throughout the ages. The principles she bases her position on are outlined in the Old and New Testaments, through the Giving and Receiving intrinsic law Jesus Christ adhered to. She mentions the law of prosperity and by the precept “All things whatsoever ye ask for in prayer, believing ye shall receive” shows it is quite possible. She understands the Spiritual Law of Karma, “Whatsoever ye sow ye shall reap,” to reflect the “fear of the Lord” so often mentioned in the Bible. There is a Law of Nonresistance that she mentions. If you believe in good and evil, you are divided, she convincingly purports. You must only believe in good and not pay homage to evil for that allows it to spread, thus putting you in the throes of negativity and inflicting tragedy upon yourself. She puts the laws to work for her and for those who ask for her help, also giving mention to the times the laws are improperly used thus producing negative results. The book is then an accumulation of stories of how the success principles actually ring true for each individual who experiences them. It is by far an outstanding and inspiring work for the ordinary individual who wants to see the extraordinary work in their lives. The caveat it seems is that you must intrinsically believe! If you’ve read “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne you will understand through “The Game of Life and How to Play It,” that Byrne’s principles have actually been told before by Shinn, they have just been buried through the ages. Byrne’s work actually gives a more watered down version of success principles to make them more appealing to a wider audience. If you don’t mind the Bible connotations or are just curious to see how they work, then Shinn’s book is for you! If this was as inspiring to you as it was to me, then you must get the complete Shinn biography for more of the same!
