It was typical for me to go in an Internet shop and open my Yahoo Messenger. I entered in a Hong Kong-oriented chat room to meet some Asian friends. I met a guy and we had a nice chatting. he wondered if I came from US due to my fluency in English. I'm quite flattered but I'm proud to be Pinoy. It took time before he replied with annoyance, "Your Filippo!?"
Amahs like ol do is cook food, wash laundry n clean batrum. Ur ol
stupid!" GRRRR! Such treacherous words that forced my fist to clench. Well, what do you expect? From that moment, our discussions were filled with acrimony and I, eventually, logged out. That wrecked my day.
I was furious at our neighboring countries having a notion that Filipino "amahs," which literally mean "domestic helpers," are all worthless and stupid. Doubtless to say, our kababayan encountered maltreatment like beatings, verbal abuses, starvations, and imprisonment in their employer's homes, or worse even subjected to sexual abuses. Hence Filipino
maids experience a hostile world of racial prejudice inhibiting their rights and priviledges abroad.
Firstly, we know that the Philippines is the third largest English-speaking countrym we, Pinoys, can write and speak English fluently. So the Filipino maids are highly competitive globally, compared to other Asians who are desperately in need of English literacy. Okay, based on the quotation mentioned above, who's stupid above?
Secondly, Filipino maids don't just wash dishes, change diapers, scrub floors, or cook dinner; they could even debug the Blaster
virus, the infamous virus that attacked the Microsoft Head Quarter. A Pinay maid did it and said that it was more fun than doing the laundry. She learned Microsoft Office and Power Point at a computer school whose student body is composed of mostly maids. Now she occasionally fills out Excel Spreadsheet for her employer, and gives their child computer lessons. In addition to that, the Economist magazine says that there are 154,000 household maids or amahs in Hong Kong as of 1998 and 40% of those are non-Chinese. Over half of Filipino amahs have their college degrees, and some even hold master's
degree in education. Thus, we have proven that they have the capabilities far beyond household chores.
And lastly, Filipino maids resemble the 20th century
conquerors. Although, we may not be a hegemonic country, we do have the ultimate weapon that crisscross the globe affecting the most influential individuals on earth. I'm talking about overseas domestic workers, servants, and housemaids. Themselves, they could be the world's newest and greatest conquerors.
Indeed, the degree of social and economic status of a person in inversely proportional to the individual's greatness to do housework. The Philippines is not a superpower, but with the aid of these Filipino maids, we could probably dominate the world. Today, they clean your bathrooms but tomorrow they conquer!!!!
