The Dogs of Bedlam Farm is Jon Katz''s account of his year as a sheep farmer with his dogs - Orson, Homer and Rose. Katz
is a best selling author with ten or more books under his belt. He has written both fiction and
non-fiction. TDoBF starts a little slow but with minimal patience you''ll begin to find yourself becoming attached to the characters Jon so keenly describes. This easy read is one mini adventure after another. Only a few stories take us off Bedlam Farm and still fewer beyond the town of West Hebron. Katz learns a tremendous amount about himself - attributing most of the instruction to his canine family - but also to his
neighbors - the real farmers. Katz battles one of the toughest winters in recent memory and, eventually, through hard work, earns the respect of the community. The experience was powerful for Katz - so much so he decides to continue living on and working the farm beyond the end of the book. He may still be there today. Don''t miss the trip Jon takes to reconnect with his long estranged sister. Rose travels with Katz and helps his sister''s neighbors round up a renegade ewe and ram - the chase was "worth the price of admission" for me. It''s not my favorite book ever but - I would reread it again in the future if the opportunity arose - and I may read another Jon Katz book but I have no intention of attempting to read them all. At the end of TDoBF I was left wanting more - the sure sign of a winner. I do recommend.
