MYTH OF MALE POWER- AN OVERVIEW
All the discussions regarding describing
gender bias towards
women looks to be one sided.This statement is supported by the facts found by Dr warren Ferrell, (psychologist at Cornell University) in his book Myth of Male Power. Even it was an eye opening experience for me. I got this masterpiece on one fine morning while I was in Canada, wondering through Mississauaga public library. The author emphasizes the fact that although the male
society appears to dominate the world, it is the reverse thing dominates all across the globe. His main finding is the fact that our society does not care much about life of a man!(at the same time expectations in every aspect of life from men are raised unresonably when it comes to gender based performance)
While I see everywhere female graduates are well placed, established in life,many of my male friends are still in desperate situations for proper jobs even in the late thirties! Even it is very common occurance that males are easily fired from jobs , transferred from one place to another(may be because of their own errors, that may be a different set of situations. However such incidences are very common)
When I had to get back from Canada, due to lack of proper placement it was hard to believe my female classmates ( with average academic records) were placed in USA/Europe comfortably through their families. So its evident who enjoys more support.
Even in divorce cases the jury doesn’t forget to ask the woman whether she needs alimony though she might be working!(The author categorically
points out the government always acts as substituted husband!)
Dr. Warren Ferrell points out women got protections against dirty jokes in few years where as men are still fighting against hazardous work conditions/death at work places! (As if women's modesty has got priority over men's life!)This is the picture in the so called pragmatic western society such as USA.
Even in many developing countries such as India, at many offices the female staff is highly inefficient. They enjoy long /often leaves also can report very late on duty and in turn gifted with soft duties etc. No body can raise voice against such gross inefficiencies. It is common to see men being probed in offices , getting primary accusations and handled roughly in any disciplinary charges/cases. Also it is a common scene in offices to see male staff burdened with heavy responsibilities.Probably male’s subservience to female beauty and society's overprotective approach towards women may be the root causes as the author points out in the book
This book is really a master piece and adds one more vision to your intellect. For every good individual this book is a must read.
This is not to initiate any fight in gender issues, nor do I hate women! But to add one more dimension to current discussions on gender related issues.I know there is no end to these kind of discussions nor do they yield nor do they yield very positive changes in society instantaneously.
Nevertheless truths remain unchanged
