THE LOVE BETWEEN SISTERS

Book Review by: MOHUA

Original Author: HELEN EXLEY
I believe this is what Helen Exley wanted to convey in her compilation.  In life brothers and sisters play a pivotal
role moulding each other''s character.  The mother''s role is no doubt the most difficult and the most longest.  The siblings have their side roles to play.  It grows silently but strongly.   Unfortunately in many cases the relationship is lost in the maze  of life''s journey.  Yet nothing can break the bond of relationship among siblings.   The odd circumstances, like turbulent waves might separate the sisters and a silence is created but in that situation the mind can hear the soft voice, the footsteps, the silent laugh, and visualize the tears of parting.   Another beautiful aspect of the book is growing up. When two sisters grow up there can be annoying interferences, monopolizing bathroom, looking critically at each other, throwing words.  Still you know that should a catastrophe strike you, your sister''s tender hands will protect you.   This collection celebrates the bond that is never broken, the bond is a lasting friendship and  we often browse desperately through shelves of a bookshop to pick up the right kind of book to gift a special person.  Your long hours of search may end magically if you get hold of the copy of  "The Love Between Sisters".  This book has been published by Exley publications Ltd, 16 Chalk Hill, Watford, U.K.  The compilation is by Helen Exley.   This book is miniature in form with coloured photographs of sisters in company with each other in different situations.  It is a treasure to possess.  Each photograph is preceded by few lines on the various aspects of this wonderful relationship.  One such rendering is "I use the terms {sisters} to refer to two women related by blood, most often growing up in the same house, in the same room, often sleeping in the same bed.  As are all women, such sisters are taught by literature and culture to compete for the attention of men, beginning with their father.  Yet when asked to speak about their connections with each other, members of these pairs usually find themselves articulating a deep and turbulent bond, one that precedes and outlasts friendships, courtships, even marriages."_  an amazing tie!   The illustrations add beauty and meaning to the book.  The book is not only methodically but perfectly arranged.  The captions of the pictures are fascinating,  ''Sulks and Huffs is illustrated by the following quotes - "Sisters annoy, interfere, criticise.Indulge in monumental sulks, in huffs, in snide remarks.  Borrow, break, monopolize the bathroom are always underfoot.  But if catastrophe should strike.  Sisters are there.  Defending you against all covers."   "Mirrors to each other" is another fascinating caption followed by a realistic one like "Being Apart".  This aspect of the relationship deals with separation.  How it feels to be away from a sister - "Now that I have everything neat and rice on shelves and hangers,  I sometimes long for you to come around and ruffle through my things and say - ''Oh look at this ! can I just borrow till Sunday?''   The book is hardbound, an ideal gift for a sister.  It consists of sixteen pages and other books of the same style are 1) Mothers 2) Brothers 3) A token of love.
