As a teacher of English as a Spoken Language I’ve
found the book ‘English
Vocabulary in Use – pre-
intermediate &
intermediate’ by Stuart Redman an extremely useful book for classroom use. Its
unique format of the explanation of the terms on the left the page, accompanied
by suitable illustrations with sufficient written practice on the right pages
combines a workbook for the
students. It can be used for self-study as well. The
topics start off with simple everyday life like home, family, relationships to
which the students can easily relate to going on to more complex issues like
pollution, traffic, war, crime, government etc. After completing a chapter the
students can then be asked to discuss and write about their own experiences,
giving them a solid foundation in everyday vocabulary and its use. Even
grammatical concepts like prepositions, adverbs, use of prefixes and suffixes
etc. are explained in the same format, making it
easy to understand. Every
sentence incorporates new words and explains how it can be used in a sentence
without going into its grammatical nitty-gritty.
The book contains 100 easy-to-use units of vocabulary. It
has a
key, a detailed index and a pronunciation and phonetics key.
It is published by Cambridge
publications as a low-price edition and at Rs. 140 only it is quite affordable
for anyone who wants to improve his language and vocabulary.
