QUEEN OF THE RAIN
Amata a hardworking, good and peaceful woman was married for five years without a child. Her husband
Salu, equally hardworking never yielded to family and friends persuasion to drive his wife Amata away for her barrenness.
Amata and Salu both farmers though poor, but are very good people through thick and thin they went together. One day Amata assisted a little girl home and at midnight the little girl turned to a clean transparent polythene bag filled with very cold water.
Out of fear Amata became ill. Three weeks later the doctor confirmed Amata to be carrying a two weeks old pregnancy. She gave birth after nine month to a beautiful baby girl whom she named ‘ Pretty’ for she was really beautiful.
The child was not only beautiful but was also full of good characters like her parents. She was wise, brave and tough that she never weeps even when scolded.
Shortly after the birth of ‘pretty’ the financial life of Salu and his wife changed for better, their farm produce began to yield much better than those of every other people in their community. Miraculously too people from far and near preferred to buy whatever they need from Salu and his wife. With this they gradually grew to become the richest family in their community. Salu became very influential.
Sooner wealth and power intoxicated Salu and he began to have an affair with another woman out side his matrimonial home, claiming that since Amata could not give him another child for five years after the birth of Pretty, he needed another woman to give him a male child to inherit his work after his death.
Eventually Salu married Lucy as his second wife, and when Lucy gave birth to a male child, Salu forgot the bad times Amata went through with him and he began to maltreat Amata and her only daughter Pretty. With all these Lucy out of greed said she doesn’t like to share her husband with anybody anymore, so she decided to poison Amata and her daughter. Amata died, Pretty was never affected by the poison, but on hearing the news of her mother’s death, she began to weep for the very first time in her life and as she wept it began to rain, the louder she wept the heavier it rained. No one could console her, not even her father, soon the whole community was covered with flood and eventually the flood carried the houses, trees and every living things including people in the community down to the nearby river where they all perished and never to be found again. Thereafter Pretty began to melt from her feet to her head and finally turned to water and flow away.
