We are
using
storytelling every day of our lives, while we talk about our day-to-day
adventures (or misadventures) we use it, we exaggerate, use gestures and
silences for effects and we form mental images of what we say or hear. The same
process can be use in class rooms.
Is
easier for people to
remember things learned through stories, it gives a
structure, a whole to remember the parts, maybe, like music, when you remember
a single part the whole song comes to your mind. We identify with characters;
we are inspired by their success and sad with their sadness, stories about
students struggling that end up victorious may be inspiriting (stories that
mock of the character we feel identified with might not have the same effect).
We
both (tellers and listeners) find within stories fears not that common on day-to-day
talk, but if we have a discussion after hearing the story it will be much
easier to talk about and face them. The same can be say about values, we see
the “best” and “worst” of human beings and the concept itself of “
good” and
“bad” is reinforced or re-evaluated provoking critical thinking and values
recognition.
Stories
say a lot about people so we can lean about the others (and even ourselves) by
paying attention to what story we chose to
tell or the subject or way we tell a
given
situation. By telling personal stories the relation among people comes
closer.
Literature
as it is a communication method and a cultural manifestation that is often left
aside, reading and writing (specially in a literary sense) helps us have a
better
understanding of social reality and to express it. We can give our own
understanding of the world and take a glimpse of others’.
Stories
provides you meaning, the weight of history in ancient myths, the present fashions in contemporary novels,
small details, expressions, even feelings. And there are those really special
stories that we really like, that inspire us changing our minds, just because
of a word, the situation we listen to it, the passion with it was told to us,
how much fun we have with it!
Stories
are a good tease for the mind.
