Congress To Consider Jena Six Case

Book Review by: Mosimane

Original Author: Tommy Elder, Jr.
Citing an escalation in racial acts of intimidation- some Democrats in the
United States Congress called on the
U. S. Government to intervene. Devlin
Barrett of the Associated Press noted that Democrats in congress castigated
Federal inertia in the Jena, Louisiana cases. In an address in the United
States Congress- United States Congress- Texas Representative Ms. Sheila
Jackson Lee stated- `Shame on you.` Speaking to the United States Department of
Justice- She asserted- `Why didn`t you intervene?` Responding to the query-
United States Attorney for Louisiana`s Western District said-`I was also
offended; I too am an African-American.` He went on to state that- `I did
intervene. I did engate the district attorney. At the end of the day, there are
only certain things that the United States attorney can do.` According to
Michigan Congressman Representative John Conyers- an invitation went out to the
Jena area district attorney Reed Walters to address the United States Congress
but he declined the effort to speak before this body. During an address to
Congress- Civil Rights Activist the Reverend Al Sharpton condemned the United
States` Justice Department`s remission in investigating the alleged incidents
of racial intimidation. He noted that injustice reigned in a criminal justice
system that failed to prosecute- white students for a hate crime because they
are minors.`
