The Death Penalty
There are many reasons not to have a death penalty,
and among them are that it is expensive, ineffective, and wrong.
It is expensive because it costs significantly more
than life in prison. In each state that publishes statistics, including
the United States itself, capital punishment costs much more than,
sometimes as much as twice as much as, keeping a person locked up for
the rest of his life.
The death penalty is ineffective because it does not
deter. It is the Certainty of punishment, not the Severity of
punishment that deters.
The death penalty is wrong because, by killing we as
a society do not teach that killing is wrong, but rather we teach that
we solve our problems, deal with our frustrations, by killing, which is
just what the person charged with unlawful killing has done.
What the death penalty IS is very effective at
electing politicians, so it will remain with us for many years
