Time's Perfume

Book Review   by:Josephineamelie     Original Author: Jean d''Ormesson
ª
This abstract was translated from Odeur du temps

The last work of the French academician Jean d'' Ormesson has not been a novel but an anthology of its chronicles published in the Barber and the Barber Magazine for more than thirty years. These selected pieces speak about time and space, of the future which becomes present before[BR]sinking in the past with a speed. Before a thought is conceived, it belongs to the future; hardly expressed, it already passed. [BR] This book also speaks about the books, literature, French and foreign, without forgetting the voyages, Italy and the Greek islands so dear to the author. Most critics will say that the writer octogenarian has been rewriting since a few years ago, always the same stories: universe, the creation of the world, the Big-bang, space, time, books, love, etc. The unconditional ones, like me, will retort that[BR]these drivels are magnificiently written. With Jean d'' Ormesson, scholar author and comic, one feels a little more intelligent, even if all is not understood. Because he involves us with an enthusiasm of young man in his universe without always leaving us time to take a[BR]dictionary. [BR] The language which he employs is so beautiful, the music of phrased sound so nice, that one continues his reading, just for the pleasure of the words. Is it necessary to be a pianist to appreciate Chopin''s Nocturne? That helps incontestably, but the[BR]sensitivity is not the prerogative of an elite and anyone can recognize beauty. Then do not hesitate to read this work because, to take again an expression loved by the author, it is impressing!!!
