Roger Ascham and his "Toxophilus"

Book Summary by: Moreno132

Original Author: Roger Ascham
Roger Ascham was an English scholar and didactic writer. He was educated at St. John''s College in Cambridge where he studied
Greek. He finished his degree in 1534 and his M.A. in 1537.
His first work, "Toxophilus" published in 1545 was dedicated to Henry VIII, the book dealt with Ascham call to practice shooting with long bow as an aid for national defense and to reach to higher style of composition. In that time Ascham also took the role of teaching Greek and Latin, and secretary to king Edward VI. He also translated texts and books from Greek to English.
His book, the "schoolmaster" was published in 1576, nine years after his death. The book is a research on educational methods and techniques for teaching latin to children; the method itself seem to be taken from Cicero, he was the first definite demonstration of humanity in his educational method. Ascham died in the 23rd of December 1568 after finishing writing a poem for the Queen for the New Year.
