Journeys: Words, Home & Nation (Anthology of Singapore Poetry 1984~1995)

Book Review by: Ahmir

Original Author: Prof. Edwin Thumboo (Chief Editor)
The poems in Malay Poems Section are by poets generally considered as
prominent & significant in the Malay literary
scene. This section
constitutes a valuable record of the social history of the Malays of
Spore. It reflects both the change & continuity taking place as
each generation expresses itself in the evolving literacy heritage. One
clear theme running thru many of the poems selected is the question of
cultural identity, sense of restlessness & pain involved in search
for identity, sense of peace & confidence inspired by the
rootedness of one''s heritage. Overall the poems in this section reflect
in literary form the aspirations, ideals, frustration & hope of
Spore Malays. My poems entitled "We Are We (Kitalah Kita)",
"Man''s Reason (Akal Manusia)" & "Without Feeling (Tanpa Merasakan)"
were included in the anthology.
