It is an autobiographical novel which deal with the unhealthy relationship between the hero of the novel and his mother and the bad effect of this relationship on his future relationships with other women. Paul the hero lives a dilmma based on his strong attachment to his mother as she dominates his life and his feelings .She fills up his life leaving no other place to any other woman in his life.She copmetes with mirriam the girl her son falls in
Love with on his heart .She deos not want her son to have an emotional fullfilment with any girl as she always looks at him as a husband substitute.She is disappointed in her marriage as she turned to her
Sons to fill the emothional gap in her life .After the oldest son had died she focused all her love and her full attention on paul and then she poisened his life by her over domination over his feelings.Finally paul finds an outlet for his sexual desires without any kind of emotional involvement in his relationship with a mature woman clara.Clara has been able to open paul,s eyes to the fact that mirriam wants his love only not his soul.But it is too late for him to discover the realityas he desides to lose his true love with mirriam in order to satisfy his mother.Paul is always ready to play the role of ahusband substitute as he used to take his mother,s side against his father .He believes that his mother deserves somebody much better than his father and he tries to give her what she really deserves. He is not a man on his feet he used to return to her in every single detail in his life.The novel ends with an opening hope that paul may regain his life after his mother,s death.
