The Necklace by
Guy de Maupassant is a thought provoking story which has its own novelty and read by a great number of people in innumerable languages.
The stroy is woven around the central character called Mathilde Loisel. She was one of the pretty, and charming young girls who sometimes are born,as if by a slip of fate, into a family of clerks. She had no fortune to her credit or no way of being known , understood and wedded to any rich man. So she lets herself be married to a clerk of the Ministry of Public information. Madame Loisel is always unhappy with her plain state of living . Ambitious to be known among the wealthy class, her heart ached for the company of celebrities, when one day, her husband managed to get them invited to a grant party thrown at the palace of the Ministry. Mathilad's joy knew no bounds. But soon her spirits dampened at the thought of the lack of a good party gown and accesssories to go with it. Her husband came to her aid, gave some money to buy a decent gown for herself. But still there was the question of a flashy necklace to go with it. She ignores her husband's meek suggestion of wearing fresh flowers as ornamnets, as those were in fashion. Her thirst for being considered as a well dressed lady always came in the way of listening to her husband's advice. She goes to her friend,Madame forestier, and borrowed a superb diamond necklace and her heart throbbed with immoderate desire. She enjoyed her reflection in the miror.
Madame Loisel was a great success at the pary. she was prettier than any other woman, elegant, graceful, smiling and filled with joy. All the gentlemen wished to waltz with her. She was remarked upon by the minister himself. They left the party at four o clock in the morning. Finally when she reached her dwelling, went in front of the mirror at once, to have a final glance of her reflection, only to learn that she had Lost Madame forestier's diamond necklace! What happened later was a horrible existence for Mathilde Loisel. She and her husband, went from jeweller to jeweller, looking for something similar, trying to recall the pattern every time. Atlast they found a similar one. But had to scrape even the last penny to buy it. Years rolled by, when one day she met madam Forestier on the street. Madame Forestier did not recognize her as years of toil and hard life had pinched away her beauty. She introduced herself .... Madame Mathilde got her final blow when she learnt that it was a fake diamond necklace which she had replaced with a real one!!!!.
Maupassant, the greatest French story writer, seems to give the advice that "Don't aspire for more than you have, it will only ruin you.
