The Lollipop Shoes

Book Review by: Andee

Original Author: Joanne Harris
'The Lollipop Shoes' is the sequel to 'Chocolat'. It is 5 years later, and Vianne and her daughter Anouk, now known as Yanne
and Annie, and accompanied by four-year-old Rosette, are now living in Paris, and again running a chocolaterie. But now Vianne has lost interest in making her own chocolates, and buys in her stock like other shopkeepers do. Much of her spark has gone also, and she is contemplating marriage to her landlord, who can provide for her and her daughters. It seems she may have escaped the restlessness imposed on her by the wind and her mother's spirit. At this point Zozie, a strange witch-like character, with a history of stealing people's identities, moves in on them, and transforms the chocolaterie to something like the one Vianne herself used to run, re-introducing the home-made chocolates and charming the customers just as Vianne herself used to do. Anouk is on the brink of adolescence, resents the change in her mother, and she is bewitched by Zozie. Then, back onto the scene comes Roux, the river gypsy Vianne fell for back in Lansquenet, unaware that he is Rosette's father. Anouk is learning to weave her own magic spells, and there is something very different about Rosette. Can Vianne avoid the danger which lurks in the person of Zozie, the lady with the lollipop shoes, and find her way back to Roux and and end to a way of life dictated to by the wind?
