LOST OBJECTIVES
There’s more to the world than that it meets the eyes. Through varied sources one comes across
glimpses of that “more” quotient. Literature is one such avenue, which makes available that quotient to our curiosity.
In Indian school of thoughts; literature is, something created for the happiness of self, contentment of others and uplifting of the society. It held true…as is evident from the literature created worldwide during all those earlier eras stretching from the vedic period till recent dates. Who in this world is not familiar with the Vedas, Puranas, Iliad, and various other ancient texts serving the purpose. However, the notions are changing now. With the new age sagas of malaise, anguish and treachery common in the society captivating the minds of writers, modern literature has overlooked the earlier objective.
It is well conceived that literature is the reflection of the society. The way society is degenerating today is being portrayed well in the literature of modern times. So much so that instead of society being inspired by literature, at times the latter is getting motivated by the former. But in this process of changing objectives, literature has somewhere lost its sheen. Writers have been portraying society as nude and crude as it is. This is realistic though, but what needs to be assessed is whether this obsession with the “realistic” writing among modern writers has extended a bit too far?
A writer, to me, is an accomplished soul who while putting forth the malice of the society; guides it to healthier avenues through the whim of his literary mind’s resources. A writer is among the few responsible ones who play a role in manoeuvring a generation to elevated humanity. His moral duty towards his era calls for providing people with a vision they can access to, whenever the need arises. A writer needs to weave his fantasies to cover the nudeness of society, and conjure his charm to mellow the crudeness, not merely exposing them. Then only his work can be termed ‘literature’, the immortal work of art.
