This wonderful small book of 80 pages gives
the
reader an excellent resource needed for
effective
public speaking. The Seven golden rules the writer presents systematically to follow by every newcomer to this field of communication. If follow those steps ceremoniously one can definitely conquer the even otherwise difficult task of public speaking. It’s a must and helpful guide to the beginner. The author says in its preface: “Public speaking is a wonderful exercise. It is always a challenge and can bring great enjoyment.”
Speech is one of the important things which distinguish
man
from animals. It’s a great privilege only human beings got in this world. An effective communication gives one a powerful influence over the other. One can definitely conquer the other fellow being through his or her powerful speeches. For this one need an effective and continuous effort of daily practice. The writer says, “What is worth doing is worth doing well. Therefore one should aim to
speak
well.
“I know that he can speak well” Exodus 4:14) was God’s striking testimony to the eloquence of Aaron.
The following seven steps if observed well one can easily enter into this “League of Aaron”
One:
BE SURE YOU HAVE SOMETHING
WORTHWHILE
TO SAY.
The writer very emphatically says, “If you have nothing worthwhile to say, “Shut Up” You will be considered a wise man.
Have you something worthwhile to say? “Give attendance to reading. Read the Bible. It is God’s revelation to men. It presents Christ the God man. It sets forth the Gospel—the Good News of Salvation. Read history it is the record of man’s experience in the world. Read good literature. It is man’s understanding of himself and his times.” The person who reads and contemplates will always have something worthwhile to speak.
Two:
BE SURE YOU HAVE MASTERED WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO SAY.
The writer gives here an important point, “What you are going to say must be carefully thought out
and not only thought out but thought through.
The books on the subject
upon
which your are going to speak should be used in two ways only
To Prime the Pump:
The thoughts of other on a subject can stimulate our own thoughts and help to get the flow going.
To Test Our Own Thinking and Conclusions:
The work of others in the same field can help us to test the accuracy and credibility of our own thinking. Our views should be able to withstand the closest scrutiny. We need to try the spirits of our own thoughts.
Three:
BE SURE YOUR AUDIENCE CAN HEAR WHAT YOU SAY
The necessity of making yourself clearly and distinctly heard is absolutely essential.
Learn to pronounce and enunciate your words clearly. Don’t always use the same tone or volume, Variations should be your constant aim. Let your voice be at times, pathetic almost to tears, joyful with the very thrill of rapture, potent with the clarion ring and soft as a dewdrop slipping into the lily pond. Play the soft lute of love and the loud trumpet of of war equally well. The voice is your masterly instrument. Learn to play it well and it will pay you well.
Four:
BE SURE YOUR AUDIENCE CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU SAY
If what you have to say is not clear to yourself it cannot be clear to those who listen. Simplicity is the golden key to the treasury of effective speech. Ruskin says, “The greatest thing a human soul ever does in the world is to see something and tell what it saw in a plain way”. “Only clear cut thinking will lead to clear cut speaking. Martin Luther said, “One of the reasons for his effective preaching was that he tried to be simple, to be understood by the working classes and by children of twelve or thirteen”.
“Always have a high respect for the ordinary individual. Jesus Christ it was said that the common people heard Him gladly. Why? Because they were able to understand His words. Cicero said, “use only those words “in
daily common use”
Remember his verdict will make you or break you.” Emerson defined eloquence as, “The power to translate a truth into language perfectly intelligible to the person with whom you speak”.
