Who moved my Cheese?

Book Review by: zerozero

Original Author: Dr. Spencer Johnson
Are you one of those people who are fearful of change? Never forget that change is a permanent in life. Reasonable unavoidable
change calls out to be embraced. Making use of opportunities which come in the wake of change is more pleasant than trying to ‘keep things as they have always been’.
‘Who moved my Cheese?’ is a light read which basically encourages us all to embrace change and look for what we can do with it, what we can get from it.
The characters in the story are two mice and two little people who all live in a maze and daily look for, and find, delicious cheese. The mice symbolize people who lead simple lives and readily adapt to changes. They do everything almost by rote, but in their total simplicity they are also perceptive and notice small changes. When they find their cheese no longer at the usual place, they immediately realize this was inevitable, as they had been aware that the supply was dwindling.  Without too many how’s, why’s, and who’s, they resume their routine of running around in the maze, searching for new cheese.  A change of circumstances in effect calls for a change in their behaviour and routine.
The little people, however, go about their life differently. Having more complex brains, they see it fit to start staking territorial claims. They believe it is their right to have the cheese just where it is at that very time.  Success and comfort leads to negligence, and thus they fail to notice signs of change. It is  a rude shock when they find no more cheese, and then starts the amazement, the anger, that something ‘out of the norm’ can happen to them. How dare life show them such disrespect?!
Whereas the simple mice explored new areas of the maze, the little people analyzed what had happened over and over. One then decides to accept the change and move on.  He finds that it is a wise decision.
We will experience all kinds of change in our journey through life, we should learn to adapt rather than fight.  Once the Universe has allowed it, change is inevitable.
