Meet Rebecca Bloomwood!!
She spends her worklife giving financial advice to others.
She spends her leisure time.....SHOPPING!!
The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic follows the story of Rebecca Bloomwood, a financial journalist working for the monthly magazine, Successful Saving . She gives advice to the readers on how to manage their money, but her personal finances are a mess. Retail therapy is the only answer to all her worries, even as her bank overdraft balloons and her credit card bills pile up. She makes up the most unlikely of excuses to avoid a meeting with her bank manager to discuss her delicate financial situation.
Rebecca tries Cutting Back, but all her attempts at frugality backfire as she cannot stop herself from buying stuff. She then tries Making More Money, applying for a banking job and then for a Saturday job, but they come to nought. She tries to get a grip on her life, but the situation just worsens. To relieve herself of her problems, including the absence of a boyfriend, she indulges in the comfort of shopping. Things come to a head when she loses the use of all her credit cards, and realises that she is up to her head in debt. The rest of the story traces how she manages to get a hold on her finances and find her dream man.
The book takes a humorous look at how big a role shopping plays in the life of women and how it can truly mess up your life, especially when taken as a form of therapy. It is a story that could be the story of anybody who has indulged in shopping a lot more than usual, and has found himself or herself confronted bya mountain of debt. A fun read for a lazy afternoon, the book is a tongue-in-cheek look at the modern obsession for shopping.
