Animal Farm is also utopian literature, because in his representation
of the negative excesses, Orwell indirectly expresses
his expectations
and hopes. Animal Farm shows Orwell to be a sceptic as far as
social
changes are concerned - he asks the question whether revolutions
are the right vehicle for bringing about changes for the majority of
the population. His message can only be interpreted thus - this
can only be the case if the course of the
revolution remains
controllable and if it's decided that the leadership is to seperate
itself from the masses - that's to say, from a given point, it only
concerns itself with its own interest. But to achieve this, every
person should be in the position to attentively pursue and judge
political developments; this presupposes on the other hand, that they
overcome their lethargy and mental laziness. Only then can the
revolution bring long term change for those who originally initiated it.
