Under The Tuscan Sun

Book Review   by:bluevelvet     Original Author: Frances Mayes

This story is for people who love a different culture, cooking, renovating and discovering simple things in life as well as the joy of harvesting your own fruit and fresh ingredients. It also tell of the beauty of the Tuscan and Italian countryside, its people and loving a totally different environment as it was during the old days. Tuscany is rich in history . Frances Mayes and Ed, her partner travelled to Italy and decided they like the summers there and they decided to buy a house and spend part of the year there after their academic work in the US is done. They found out that buying a house here is a slow experience as the Italians do things the slow normal pace and a totally different approach to doing things. They found the house they like called Bramasole but it needs plenty of work like new plumbing and heating and needs a lot of work to make living comfortable there. The garden and fruit trees need weeding and tidying up and they had to do most dirty work. Finding a builder is also hit and miss as they are strangers in a foreign land . They learned how to cook with fresh ingredients direct from the garden or bought fresh from the market. They have purposely hired carpenters to build a long table ideal for long lunches outside and discovered to their delight how to live and eat like the locals. Each day they mostly discovered something new or interesting . They also learned how to conserve water as most Italians do as sometimes water is scarce and they need to shorten their showers and recycle some water for the garden. They travelled all over Italy getting a feel for the land they will live in for sometime.
