BOX AND COX

Book Review by: airavat

Original Author: John Maddison Morton
"Box and Cox" is a classic. It is one of the famous works of John Maddison Mortons. It is an original and simple creation.
It is a farce, it depends on odd behaviour of the main characters of the story. The little comedy added in this is fun and clear. This story has a reference to an arrangement where accomodation and other facilities are shared by a strict time schedule. In this story there are three main characters namely John Box who is  a printer by profession, James Cox a hatter and Mrs.Bouncer a lodging house keeper. Mrs.Bouncer has rented the same lodging to Mr.Cox who worked during the day and returns to the apartment at night and Mr.Box who works during the night and comes to the apartment in morning. Through this arrangement Mrs.Bouncer is earning double rent for the same accomodation. Mr.Box and Mr.Cox meet each other in the morning when Mr.Cox is leaving and Mr.Box is returning. Each has an impression that the other lives in the attic as projected by Mrs.Bouncer. Both become annoyed when they find their things such as candles, matches, sugar etc disappearing gradually. Mr.Cox is given a holiday unexpectedly by his employer on a day, he returns and is confronted by Mr.Box, which is presented in the story in through comic situations. They both claim to be lawful owners of the apartment. Later Mrs.Bouncer surprises and shocks them by telling the truth that the apartment belongs to both.  It is a wonderful farce to read and stage.
