This is a slight but inoffensive
book for holiday reading. A
small, unassuming
tree aspires to Christmas tree greatness, but will anyone see the promise that lies behind its scrawny branches? From Hans Christian Anderson to Charlie Brown, humble trees have risen to the occasion for
years and years and the star of this book is no exception.
The classic-style of illustration -- small animals in human clothing writ in great detail -- helps bolster the timelessness credentials of the
story.
Treacle? Sure. And while parents may roll their eyes when requested to read it yet again,
little kids will root for the little tree and they''ll be satisfied with the ending, which places a kid in the role of hero. A more soothing Christmas bedtime story is hard to imagine.
Because it''s an inexpensive Scholastic book, it has the added advantage of being a nice last-minute gift or stocking stuffer, too.
