One May evening of 1675 in the log house of John Hatstinks in the northern edge of Dover, New Hampshire once lived a boy named Alben Hatstinks, his sister rebecca and his mother and father. Later, when Alben was alone and entertains himself, he heard sounds like screams, people talking and growling animals on the barnyard. so at once he got his lantern and masquet. Then when he was a dozen yards from the barnyard, he saw a calf on the shed. suddenly a panther came out of the bush from the deep woods. It had solitary glimming eyes and it''s weaving to and fro. when he was about to shoot the panther, it immediately vanished in the deep woods. When morning came, John set forth to Mr. Stephen Wayneright. When evening came, Alben was still alone in the log house, he heard sounds of animals. Immediately he got his lantern and masquet and quickly went to the barnyard. In there he saw the calf lay motionless in the shed. He was beginning to wonder who''s doing all this trouble. He went back home carrying the dead calf and thought of making it a supper for himself. After supper, he heard 2 oxen stomping their feet. When he went out to look what was going on, he saw the cattle, cows and the oxen were dead. Again he began to wonder and become nervous. When previous autumn came, Mrs. Hatstinks and Rebecca had gone off and of course Alben was left again. When he was finding something to protect himself from the old sly eyes, he began to look on the loft and saw a rope.
When he got the rope, he heard the hinges of the door creaking and it began to open. When he was about to jump from the stairs and get his masquet, in his back came up old sly eyes with his paw on Alben''s shoulders. He began to perspire and their was like an icy water cascading down his spine. He began to think of what to do. He had no weapons to fight with except for the rope. Later, he thought that he heard voices but its only the wind. Then he saw the thick blankets he and his father use for the winter. Immediately, an idea struck his mind when he saw it. He crawled with the blanket on his body towards the door. Then he felt the animal on his back. Later, he heard his sister calling but he just ignored it. He immediately rush to the masquet and shoot the panther. When old sly eyes was motionless, he saw the throat had a shot as well as its body. So he said, "My first shot didn''t miss after all." When his family opened the door, they saw old sly eyes and he began to tell what happened to him.
