Historically,
plants have played an important role in
medicine. Approximately 3000 plants species are known to have
medicinal properties in India. Our traditional system of medicine, namely, Ayurveda, Yunani, Siddha and
Homeopathy etc. use herbs for treatment. The Rigveda (3700BC) mentions the use of medicinal plants.
Electro homeopathy is the new and fifth system of medicine which is herbal in origin having no side effect. The discovery of new system of medicine is based upon well known principle of Electro homeopathy made by its founder Count Cesare Mattei of Bologna city of Italy in 1865. According to Dr Count, human body works like electronics having
positive and
negative points. The right portion of the body is considered positive while the left portion as negative. The attraction of electro homoeopathic medicines is based upon the Law of Polarity. The human body is composed of two elementary liquids, that is, lymph and the blood. Every disease originates in a change either of blood or the lymph or of both at the same times. With the purification of these two vital fluids, the imbalance between the positive and the negative diseases is corrected and all the diseases are permanently cured. The efforts of the author need to be commended in compiling the detailed information of 114 medicinal herbs used in this new system of medicine. The work is an anthology on medicinal plants used this system of medicine. The author has very precisely explained all the properties, availability of the medicinal plants and their parts used in the preparation of electropathic medicines in a very simple and common language. The coloured presentation of all the herbs has an added advantage. It is hoped that the book under review will be welcome and beneficial to the scientists, practitioners, teachers and students alike interested in the development of herbal oriented fifth medical system.
