Roughing It is a semi-autobiographical travel novel written by American humorist Samuel Clemens under the pen name Mark Twain.
Roughing It follows the travels of
young Mark Twain through the "wild
west" during the years 1861–1867. Twain joined his brother who had been appointed Secretary of the Nevada territory on a stagecoach journey west. Many of the pieces in the
book are greatly influenced by Twain's active imagination and could be described as "tall tales." The stories are very funny, espeically his visit in Salt Lake City with Mormon leader Brigham young and his adventures in sliver prospecting..In this memoir, readers can see examples of Twain's rough-hewn humor, which would be a staple of his writing into his later books. Toward the end of the book, Twain describes the process of becoming a successful writer and public speaker.
