THE LIVELIEST ART - THE POWER OF YOU AJP
Business-Art-Technique are indispensable in film creation. They are like the three points of a triangle represented by the inventor, the businessman and the artist/technician. They invent and create because they like to do that best, perhaps. The urge to create and invent overwhelms them. Remember how Edison overcame thousands of failures, more than nine thousand failures perhaps, before he succeeded in perfecting the electric bulb! The world would be so dark still had he given up!.
The
history of films too is the history of dreamers who dared to turn their dreams into reality. Obstacles and heartbreaks didn’t deter them. But their real
success and survival was beyond their control. The Livliest Art-Films, is a mass medium. Masses of audience and box-office collections decide their fate.
The best of Stars and Directors are dumped if their films flop at box-office and audiences stay away. The inventor invents, the businessman invests millions, artists and technicians work and sweat it out to make a film. But if you stay away and don’t pay to see and enjoy, it all goes waste, a flop it’s called.
Hollywood-Bollywood, the Hindi film industry, are giants of film industries in the world. They are giants because of the large audience support they have won.
Adolph Zukor believed ‘The public is never wrong.’ Maybe Zukor said that after a big celebration and drinks. But he was not much off the mark. You-the audience have been right more often wrong.
Since 1895, when Edison, Lumiere and Paul first projected a moving picture onto a white sheet, YOU-the audience, have driven forward the
development and success of the Liveliest Art.
The power of YOU-the audience is noiseless, silent but it is lightening in effect. In late twenties of the last century, Hollywood was going through a depression. The cinema halls were deserted by the audience.
Warner brothers were on the brink of bankruptcy. Desperate to survive, they gambled on sound. 1927, October 6, proved a historic day for Warner Brothers and Hollywood. On Broadway that day, Warner brothers presented Al Jolson’s The Jazz Singer, and The Lights of New York, the first full length all talking film.
The audience rushed back to cinemas once again. In 1927, paid admissions per week were 60,000,000. In 1929, the paying audience-The YOU, grew to 110,000,000 per week.
That is one evidence of the POWER of YOU, The AUDIENCE, on the development and progress of The Liveliest Art.
It is YOU, who make the Films what they are- The Unforgettable Classics, SuperHits or flops. You make The Liveliest Art Live.
