Bridge To Terabithia is a bittersweet, powerful
novel about youth, love, and tragedy. Jess Aarons is the only boy in a family of four sisters. His parents are rural people and they live practically hand-to-mouth. He doesn't have any good friends at school, but he has a lot of bullies to face. When Leslie Burke, a strong, independent, confident dreamer, moves in to the house next to his, at first he doesn't like her. But soon he can't ignore her charisma and unique view of the world, and when she suggests that they find a place of their own to go to after school, he agrees. They stumble upon an old
rope swing that hangs over a small
river in the woods. When they cross to the other side, they discover their place, and with their imaginations in full swing, they name it Terabithia, and open their minds to create its inhabitants, which are a parallel of their real-life friends and foes. In this land of make-believe, which can only be entered by the enchanted rope swing, they leave their troubles behind and become best friends. One day, however, Jess isn't there to go with Leslie to Terabithia, and
tragedy strikes. Young adults everywhere will never forget the important and valuable lessons they learn from this extraordinary girl. Katherine Paterson has really developed a timeless and ageless story here. Kudos.
Bridge To Terabithia is now a major motion picture, created by Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media. Rated PG.
