George Orwell''s classic paints before us a horrifying picture of Totalitarianism which exists in Britain in 1984. The book
was written sometime in late forties , and the author imagines a state which is controlled physically , morally and psychologically by a Govt that uses all sorts of tricks to rein in free speech and thought. In fact , it goes as far as to have a thought police to observe and summarily try and execute anyone who thinks , dares to disbelieve and tries to raise his voice against the sham that it propagates. The truth is changed routinely according to what suits the Govt on
that particular day nay that particular moment and and all previous
records are changed in accordance to that.
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTHThe three principles of the Party or the Govt which aptly describe their agenda. We are introduced to the main protagonist Winston and through his daily routine learn of the wretched , controlled and mundane lives the ordinary people lead in Britain. They are constantly under surveillance by cameras , by other people , by thought police even by their own children. Every pleasure known to man , every piece of art and all artistic pursuits are outlawed. Sex is denounced as pure evil , people fornicate only to produce children encouraged by the Party which then uses these children as eyes of the party in every household. Hate weeks , 2 minutes observance of hate ... everywhere hate is propagated , even schools pore the venomous rile into children''s mind , all in an effort to completely subjugate human bodies and even souls to the wishes of a elite Party. Winston grapples with his conflicting emotions among suspicion that he is not the only one who does so. He believes he has an ally , a party member himself .... and then there is a woman who provides him with the love his own wife could never give. And Winston slowly begins to question his pathetic life and the wretched existence he has been habituated to since his birth. He tries to find answers about the past , a better time while simultaneously wondering if things will ever get better. A hauntingly brilliant masterpiece.
