Cynthia
Lennon certainly sets the record straight in this brilliant portrayal
of her
life with John Lennon, pre-Beatles and well after the fame and
fortune had taken hold.
Cynthia
was for
years thought of as the naive wife of John, who was always in
the background,walking in his shadow.
"I
have read so many books and seen so many films, and it''s like we
don''t really exist. We are like walk-on parts in his life,"
Cynthia Lennon told "Good Morning America." "We did
spend 10 years together."
Cythia
and John met in Art Class in the 1950''s in Liverpool, where we learn
that John loved goofing around and his interest in Cynthia was not
reciprocated until a while later ,when they became madly in
love and
soon got married.
Cynthia
captures the atmosphere of Liverpool in the 50''s and 60''s
beautifully. But she also gives us insight into her relationship with
John, and the complex character of this icon.I was amazed at the
details she remembers.Below is an excerp from the book:
“Others
might have seen us as an unlikely couple, but I knew from the outset
that we had made a
deep connection. My feelings for John were very
different from those I''d had for any other boy – more powerful,
more exciting and totally unshakable. And I sensed in John the same
strong feelings. Perhaps each of us recognized and was drawn to a
deep need in the other. But at the
time I didn''t analyze it. I simply
felt certain that this was no passing fling. It was real love.”
The
book also gives us a fascinating glimpse into the life of the
Beatles, the way it was in the 1960''s when their very first hit, “Love
Me Do” reached number one and the hysteria or Beatlemania which
followed.
This
book will certainly appeal to Beatles fans and those who, even years
after his death, have a fascination with the man who was John Lennon.
I
have to say that by the end of the book, I was still confused about
who John Lennon really was. I get the impression that he was still
trying to find out himself at the time of his death.I''ve always
wondered what it would have been like to be a teenager in the time of
Beatlemania, and Cynthia Lennon helped transport me back to those
times.
This
book is a truly emotional journey, which leaves the reader in no
doubt as to
Cynthia
Lennon''s love for John Lennon.I thoroughly enjoyed it.
