Two Frogs

Book Review by: SandySinha

Original Author: Fable
The story is well known. But, like all good stories it retains its charm, no matter how many times you hear them. So once
upon a time there was a frog who lived in...well... in a well! The well was deep and had plenty of worms and vegetations. Feeding on them, the frog had grown big and strong. One day, another frog that lived in the sea came and fell into the well. "Where have you come from?" the frog of the well asked. "I am from the sea." Answered the sea-frog. "The sea! How big is that? Asked the well-frog. "It is very big." Said the sea-frog. "Is it as big as my well?" well-frog took a leap from one point to another. "What nonsense you speak, you compare your well with the sea?" the sea frog replied. At this the well-frog becomes angry. "Nothing can be bigger than my well! You are a liar. Leave this well immediately."
Now there is two facet of this story. I see it as the ignorance of the well frog and arrogance of the sea-frog. Moreover, as the well-frog had never seen the sea, he had no idea what it could be. And, the sea frog coming from a superior place should have shown some empathy towards the well-frog. Instead of getting irritated, he could have explained the situation to him in a better manner. He should have taken him in confidence, and have taken him out of the well and made him see and enjoy the sea. It was like a citizen from a developed country (sea-frog) visiting a third world country (well) and meeting a citizen (well-frog) of the third world country.
There is also another version of the story. The sea-frog actually did befriend the well-frog. He took him out to see the sea. When the well-frog saw the sea, he was so overwhelmed at the sight that his brain exploded. We all live in our own world. To see, appreciate and enjoy the worlds other than our own we need to expand our mind. The world is as big as our mind is.
