We join 57 year old George as he is settling down into a comfortable retirement, building his shed in the back garden.
He plans to spend his remaining days reading historical novels and listening to light jazz.
Then his beautiful but unpredictable daughter Katie announces that she is to marry Ray. George and the family are not happy about this the think Ray has ''Stranglers'' hands.''
Katie is unsure if she does in fact love Ray or if she just loves the way he cares for her and her son Jacob.
George''s wife is a bit put out by the way the wedding arrangements are getting in the way with her torrid afaire with one of George''s former colleagues. George''s son Jamies life starts to crumble when he can not bring himself to invie his lover Tony to the wedding, all the while and unnoticed, George discovers a small lesion on his hip a slowly, quietly begins to loss his mind.
