God - your own consciousness. Unlike in meditation the Bauls drop their ego in the beginning itself; there is no need to work on it. Most
essential thing that is needed to drop ego is love. Bauls talk, sing and dance about this love, which is hidden in you at the core of your being. It is already there. You have to find a way to reach the innermost core- the essential man. His whole search is “who am I” and he is very respectful to other human beings because they all belong to that essential nature, ALL OTHER FORMS ARE OF THAT FORMLESS ESSENTIAL NATURE, ALL THE WAVES BELONG TO OCEAN. The tool he uses to reach essential man is love. Osho beautifully says that
“what so ever you love you become, and what so ever is your love you will find”. He does not mean love in ordinary sense- love of your mother, or father or husband or wife or children etc he is neither, against it, what he mean is love the divine something that transcends things, that which transcends all forms. He continues his narration to find the essential man by meditation or by loving the divine by finding the essential man in him.
Few more tips to reach the essential man are given through out the book.Drop your ego. Ego bars the way to the essential man. Osho says ‘’
submission is the secret of knowledge; surrender is the secret of knowledge. It is not an intellectual effort, but total submersion, a merging of the self. That’s why Baul talk more about love and less about knowledge, because love is the only thing in the world which cannot be attained in any other way than by loving.” In love and meditation ego is dropped. In the meditation ego is dropped only in the last step but in the path love ego is dropped in the first step.
Reality Revealed. For worldly people, every thing is changing. To think some thing permanent is not possible everything is changing. Here he introduces the term “maya” a Sanskrit term which means that mind is at play. Maya does not mean that reality does not exist neither does it say every thing is a dream. It simply mean the way you look at the world is so unconscious, the way you look at it is so fluctuating and unstable. Once one has attained inner integrity all unstableness goes way, all fluctuation of mind goes away, and suddenly you are face to face with real, the substantial, the permanent, call it god (the essential man according to Bauls). Mind by nature cannot be stable so effort to make the mind stable are impossible. That is not character of mind. The only way is to drop the whole mind as such. Then you will be looking at the reality without the media of mind, and then god is reaveled. Then in all the form formless is revealed. That is god and understanding this is the love for the eternal or the god. This love transcends all material love. The novel man is born when you have a deep insight that worldly things have no value. Finally Osho concludes
” that whole idea of renunciation is of a vision, of great understanding, of looking into things in their reality. You need not escape from the world. You can remain in the world and become absolutely unattached. But if you feel,”why carry the burden unnecessarily?” You can leave the world also. But remember, the world has no value this way or that. If it has no value, its renunciation also has no value. If it is valuable, only then can its renunciation be valuable. But then there is no point in renouncing it; it is simply valueless. It is like a dream. When you awake, every thing disappears. You have come alone, you will go alone and between these two exists the dream.” Here the world we are in is the dream and reality is the essential man, which is what we have to find according to Bauls.
