The story opens with Albus Dumbledore leaving the young Harry Potter to his last remaining Muggle (non-magical folks) relatives, the Dursleys, who are “the biggest Muggle of all.” Harry spends ten (10) years with the the Dursleys, who try very hard to conceal Harry’s magical past and and to squash the magic out of him. After trying vainly to elude the “letters from no one” for Harry, Rubeus Hagrid, Hogwart’s gamekeeper, appears on the island where the Dursleys attempt to hide, to fetch Harry for the start of his magical education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In process, he
tells Harry his tale, that he is a legend among his kind after his parents sacrificed their lives for him, that he survived the killing curse sent by Lord Voldemort, and that he succeeded as a baby to reduce the once all-powerful and evil wizard to disappear. He meets the Weasleys who teach him how to get on Platform 9 ¾ for the train to Hogwarts and befriends the youngest boy, Ron Weasley. The Sorting Hat, takes Harry’s vehement request not to be sent to Slytherin and sends him to Gryffindor House. He discovers his talent for flying which earns him a place in the Quidditch team of Gryffindor as its Seeker, the same position that his father played. For the first time, he feels that he has found a home. At first, Harry’s constant companion and friend was Ron Weasley, a pure-blood wizard. It seems that the Weasleys are the equivalent of poor in the Muggle world. Draco Malfoy, a pure-blood sorted in the Slytherin House and Harry’s sworn enemy, challenges Harry to a midnight duel to the trophy room. Draco tells Filch, Hogwart’s caretaker, who hates students so much, and who lies in wait for Harry in the trophy room. Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville narrowly escapes Filch by hiding in one of the forbidden areas and where, to their dismay, they come face-to-face with a three-headed dog. After fleeing the room, Hermione tells them that the dog was guarding a trapdoor, which made Ron and Harry very curious. During the Halloween feast, a troll comes to the castle and terrifies the students. Harry and Ron save Hermione, who was in the bathroom crying after she overhears Ron saying that “she’s a nighmare,” from the troll. From then on, they become good friends. During Harry’s first Quidditch game, a game which is like soccer played on a broomstick, Harry’s
broom tries to throw him while up in the air. Hermione suspects Snape, their greasy-haired and mean Potions master, of jinxing Harry’s broom when she sees Snape muttering while Harry was bucking his broom. She sets Snape’s robes on fire and Harry clambers back on his broom, catches the Snitch, and Gryffindor wins the game. Hagrid defends Snape but ends up giving them a clue on what was being guarded in the castle and mentions the name of Nicholas Flamel. On Christmas, Harry receives the invisibility cloak from does not identify himself. He uses it and finds the Mirror of Erised which shows a persons deepest longings. When the term started, they find Flamel and learns that he owns the sorcerer’s stone which gives life and wealth to the owner. They conclude that it was what was being guarded by Fluffy, the three-headed dog. They go to Hagrid’s hut to ask him and was surprised to learn that Hagrid was hatching a dragon’s egg. Malfoy sees this, and when Harry and Hermione turns over the dragon to Charlie Weasley, Draco tells Professor McGonagall about the midnight incursion. Neville is also caught while trying to warn Harry and thus, all four of them earned detention and 150 points was taken from Gryffindor. As detention, they are sent to the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid to look for who ever was killing the unicorns. This is where Harry first glimpses Voldemort in his altered state. When Voldemort tries to attack him, he is rescued by a centaur named Firenze. Harry is convinced that Voldemort ist
