Lady Lara Cameron, Iron butterfly, CEO of Cameron Enterprises, formidable and strikingly beautiful, was a woman who had climbed up from the slums.
Having been born in the quiet but ravenous out backs, she had grown up as a survivor. She was the only daughter of her irresponsible father who never once said a good word to her because he had never wanted a daughter. Lara had stayed in the boarding houses and cooked for the inhabitants where her father worked as manager. Upon his well deserving death, Lara takes over the position and manages to do quite well.
At a point in time, she meets a stranger in the boarding house who teaches her everything about real estate and there at the age of eighteen she puts up her first building and leases it out on a ten year contract. However it comes at the price of losing her virginity to McAllister, a fool of a man.
Encouraged by her success in putting up her very first building, she arrives in Chicago with three million dollars to start her real estate business. All the men want from her, she finds out, is not her quick mind or intelligence, but her womanhood. Through the hustle and bustle, she meets Howard Keller, a business assistant for a bank. Later he becomes her private assistant and secret admirer and together the two take Chicago by storm.Sucess after success of building and completely leasing out, borrowing from banks, outwitting competitors and rigging negotiations, Lara meets Paul Martin who is alleged to be in the mafia. Paul is a lawyer, a very successful one who never forgives a debt and has a great deal of influence upon his tiniest finger. An affair between a man old enough to be her father and Lara starts with much passion and love.
Along the way, Lara meets Philip Adler. The world’s best pianist and realizes he is the man she has long awaited, her Lochinvar. Philip is flanked by numerous women wherever he gives a concert and Lara is in for a hell of a fight, but Lady Lara Cameron is not one to be easily put down. She goes on a quest to get Philip. At this time Howard finds her concentration reduced and her passion for work sapped.
Lara finally gets Philip and they are married. However, Philip must travel to give his concerts and Lara is left ever lonely.
Now America starts to wander who Lara Cameron is; blackmail her and you are dead the next day, write a nasty book about her and the printing press together with the book rights are bought, try to outbid her in an auction and you never know what might hit you. Philip Adler is robbed one evening after giving a concert and his wrist is lacerated by the robber. His career is ended which forces him to stay home with Lara. In his depression he takes consolation in Lara’s secretary. Feigning that she had been robbed, Lara fires her secretary. Philip later uncovers the truth and starts to doubt who the woman he loves is. Soon he finds also that the same man who ended his career, also killed Lara’s blackmailer and is on the pay list of Cameron Enterprises.
Could Lady Lara Cameron, pretty and loving go to such extents to keep Philip? Who is responsible for these strange happenings? A guardian angel? Another side of Lara or who? Lara is also currently being prosecuted for rigging the auctioning for a casino. Her debt of marrying Philip held by Paul is yet to be and Paul will do all to bring her to her knees.
Paul forgives Lara and does not testify against her. The guardian angel is found to be Howard Keller. These incidents do not leave Lara as she had been. For tears appeared where there had never been some and brokenness. Lara subdued, the Iron butterfly is finally crushed.
In the end Philip and Lara put their lives back together to face all the scandals and prosecutions that lay at their door.
