The Count of Monte Cristo
Young Edmond Dantes was first mate of the s.s Pharaoh owned by kindly Monsieur Morel. He was
about to marry sweetheart Mercedes when he was arrested on a charge of carrying a secret missive from the exiled emperor Napoleon on the island of Elba, Three men conspired to ruin him: Danglar, a banker:; aFernand, a French official; and Villefort, a cabinet member.
Edmond was imprisoned at the chateau d''If for fourteen years. He became acquainted with the aged Abbe Faria, who had dug hole to Edmond''s cell. Abbe showed and later gave him an old map of the island of Monte Cristo where vast wealth was hidden.
When Abbe Faria died, Edmond escaped by placing himself inside Abbe''s burial sack which was thrown into the sea, then he extricated himself. He worked with smugglers who left him on Monte Cristo, spent lavishly and revenged himself Count on the man who had ruined him. Banker Danglars became bankrupt; Fernand blew him brains out; and Villefort, for his past crimes, became insane. His sweetheart Mercedes who had married Fernand turned penitent.
The Count
helped Monsieur Morel, his former employer by reestablishing his banking business. He helped Morel''s son marry Villefort''s daughter. When everything is settled, he sailed to parts unknownon his own ship with Haydee, a foreign princess who loved him.
