The book which was written days before Benazir Bhutto’s brutal assassination shows Benazir’s argumentative skills. Pakistan
started off with several disadvantages at partition. In her chapter, The case for Pakistan, the author puts it succinctly: ”The major set back to Pakistan was twofold. First the founder of Pakistan died a year after independence, leaving the country without the moral authority of a leader above all other who could give a firm foundation to
democratic practices. Second under provincial self-rule, the Indian National congress had governed several provinces in India and had grassroots organizations. This was not the case in Pakistan.” Despite the wide canvas of the book, ranging from the clash of civilizations to the democratic movement in contemporary Pakistan and forcefully argued case against the notion of incompatibility between and
democracy, the author seldom provides insight into the working of Pakistan. Although the book marshals facts well, is not a definite work on Islam in modern times. Rather it is like the manifesto for the crucial election she returned to contest in her homeland after years of exile. The book is highly recommended who all consider politics is a game.
