Recommendations for Grading Practices

1.Students should be informed of procedures and standards to be used. For it is a professional obligations and even a logical requirement.

2.Acquisition of knowledge and skills should be basis for grade ; teacher and student agree on clear basis of grades.

3.Attitude should not be the basis for grade for traits are difficult to define and assess.

4.Learning ability should not be used as basis for assigning grades for no fair or no universal factor in ability into grade.

5.Motivation and effort should not be used as basis for grade for it is difficult to define and it is of questionalbe legitimacy.

6.Interest in subject matter should not be used as bases for grades for it is difficult to define and it is of questionable legitimacy

7.Personality should not be basis for grade for they are not valuable traits relative to curriculum.

8.Do not use formative assignments for grades or these are part of instruction process.

9.Aquisition for knowledge and skill should be basis for grades for frequent data give most reliable picture of progress.

10.Paper and pencil exams can provide valid and reliable basis for grade for it permit measurement of variety of learning outcomes.

11.Oral exams should be give sparingly for this method is of questionable reliability.

12.Performance observation may be reliably employed as partial basis for grades for some instructional outcomes can on be assessed thou observation.

13.Collect data frequently in concise unit.Frequency is positively related to reliability.

14.Data should be gathered that is maximally valid,reliable, and cost-effective for self-monitoring is seldom done.

15.Weight components in accordance with announced specifications.If weights are not controlled by grader,grades will not be valid.

16.District,school,and teacher grading policies need to be communicated.Everyone should be held accountable for the same standard.

17.The normal curve model sold not be used to assign grades for life s not normally distributed.

18."Fixed Percentages" grades are acceptable if there is a link between percentage and material to be required.Reference should be on percent of material,not of percentage of individuals obtaining a particular grade.

9.Do not simply aggregate raw score points for assigning grades.

20.Borderline grade cases should be reviewed in the light of additional achievement information.Let us not lose sight of the fact that graders are fallible.
