This book is the second part of the widely read trilogy by Paulo Coelho( On the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept was the first part, and The Devil and Miss Prym the final). Like other
works by Coelho, this one also contains his vision of life, the sojourn to find one’s self. The Alchemist, The Zaheer, The Witch of Portobello and The Fifth Mountain are some famous works by the same author.
Veronica lives in a small country named Slovenia. Until the last decade of twentieth century, Slovenia was part of the erstwhile Yugoslavia. Severance from the communist rule had made it search for a fresh cultural self. Veronica too is one who searches her lost self. Her twenty four years of life was enviable. She had
good parents, good education and a good job. She wasn’t able to find any
amusement in the monotonous life she led. She
decides to commit suicide and after a failed attempt is admitted to a mental hospital. She is informed that her life can’t be longer than seven more days. She finds that being in an
asylum has provided her the freedom she never had. She can do whatever she likes because she is branded an insane. She finds that she is not constrained by the value structure of the society. The belief that, her death is very near brings the true Veronica out. By the presumed final day of her life she falls in for Eduard and they escape from the asylum. Dr. Igor, the dean of the asylum alone knew that veronica was as healthy as any one physically, and will wake up the next morning to a new life. His experiment with Veronica was successful. Like other works by the same author, this one also is about mean people who yearn for finding what life is all about. There is always an answer for Coelho in love and
spirituality.
