Gossip
Girl is a series of novels created by Cecily Von Ziesgar,
which talks about the true lives of "Manhattan's
elite". Which
translates to, a bunch of rich
teenagers who have much too much of
everything, from money to freedom to..you name it and they have it.
Except maybe the less important things in life, like simplicity,
innocence, and all that boring stuff. But all kidding
aside, Cecily Von Ziesgar has managed to create a
culture on her own,
with these characters and the lives that they live. For Manhattan's
elite, or as they are called "the chosen ones", there is nothing that
is considered excessive. Sex and promiscuity is no longer something to
be concerned about, it is in fact something to be proud of. Drug usage
is an initiation, an acceptance letter for the cool crowd. What is
painted as the high life is of course nothing less than glamorous. So
if you are perhaps uncool or God forbid, unglamorous, then according to
Gossip Girl, you are a poor excuse for a human being.
Corruption. This culture that is painted in the Gossip Girl series is a
corruption of the
youth today. To be brutally honest, these
books have
less substance than phonebooks and they're passed off as quality
literature. This culture has been transferred into real life, and is no
longer just a product of someone's imagination. It is sad to see that
teenagers consider these books "really good", because they are the
opposite of that. The storylines revolve around stoners and girls who
can't keep their underwear on, and boys who can't wait to take them
off. It's about who sleeps with who, and who is cheating on who.
This culture is here now, among us and within all of us. It is
everywhere. Those of us who are left, us boring old goody two shoes
people, are left to wonder about what will happen in the future. Among
these so-called elite, will there be leaders who will arise to the
challenge when their time comes? Or will they continue to live in their
little material world, their own materialistic prison? Whatever it is,
clearly the high-life isn't so fantastic after all.
