Michael Scheuer’s "Marching Toward Hell: America and Islam after Iraq" (Free Press, Simon & Schuster, 2008, 364 p.) Michael F. Scheuer is a former CIA employee with a 22-year career as a counterterrorism officer; he resignated in 2004, so that he could warn the American people of the dangers it still faces from terrorist attacks. He is the author of more articles and books about terrorism and modern wars. In his books, Michael Scheuer analyses how successive American administrations underestimated the jihadist movement and threat against the whole world, although I think that somehow the subtitle of his last book (America and Islam after Iraq) is a little misleading us. The author seems to be a little disappointed by the fact that his opinions have not been taken into consideration by the White House and starts criticising all the American policy elite, as he considers that it was if I may sat so 'infected' by the internationalism and, by what he calls ‘one-worldism’. This book seems to ring an alarm bell for the security of the USA and, why not, for the security of the world, as the author believes that the dark forces are unleashed now and that they are at work. America holds in its hands not only its own destiny but also the destiny of the whole world… so, a failure in dealing with its enemies will affect the whole humanity both from a peaceful point of view and from a stability one. Why did I choose this book to write some words about? Because it is very recently published (2008) and because I think it deals with problems which concern the world wide community. And why not…. just because it is an ex CIA employee who wrote it…
